WESTERN CANADA WONDERS
Signature Sandman Downtown Calgary
We stayed at the Signature Sandman Hotel Downtown Calgary, a comfortable four-star hotel with spacious rooms and a very good overall standard.
We loved how well located it was, within walking distance of downtown and directly on the tram line, which made it easy to reach the city’s main attractions.

The SAM Centre
While you’re in Calgary, I’d really recommend a visit to the SAM Centre if you’d like to learn more about the Calgary Stampede. It’s a fantastic, immersive experience that explores the history and culture behind this iconic event.
One of the highlights is a 15-minute, 180-degree film shown in a theatre, which brings to life the different cultures involved, how the 10-day event operates, and the stories of people who have taken part over the years. It’s a great way to understand Calgary’s heritage and just how much the Stampede means to the local community.
It’s also very good value at around $15, and easy to reach: simply take the tram and it’s a short walk from the station.

Calgary Tower
Calgary Tower is well worth a visit, and we went up on the day we arrived. It’s a great way to take in the city from above.
Calgary is also a lively, bustling city with lovely restaurants, shops and relaxed communal spaces to explore.
Half a day to a full day is plenty for a first look, but if you enjoy city breaks, shopping and discovering local places to eat, a few nights here could be a wonderful addition to your trip.

Heritage Park Historical Village
Heritage Park is well worth a visit if you’re interested in Canadian history and heritage. As one of Canada’s largest living history museums, it offers a fascinating insight into life in Western Canada through historic buildings, costumed interpreters and interactive experiences.
It was amazing seeing it all first-hand!
It’s a lovely attraction for families and couples, with plenty of room to step back in time and explore at your own pace. I’d recommend allowing at least half a day to make the most of it.
You don’t need a car to get there either: simply hop on the tram, and a shuttle will take you up to the park.

Waterton Lakes National Park
Waterton is an amazing place! About three hours south of Calgary, it feels like stepping straight into a classic Canadian film, with beautiful mountain scenery, sparkling lakes and a charming main street lined with independent shops and restaurants.
Tucked into the far southwest corner of Alberta, Waterton Lakes National Park covers around 505 square kilometres (195 square miles) of spectacular wilderness, where the mountains meet the prairie. It also forms part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, sharing an unguarded border with Glacier National Park in Montana, USA, so you can enjoy a truly cross-border landscape.
The town itself has a lovely independent feel, with no major chain stores, just locally owned shops, cafés and restaurants to explore. It’s a seasonal destination, with the main season running from April to late September.

One of the highlights is the boat excursion departing from Waterton Marina, which takes you across Waterton Lake towards the international border and into Montana.
It’s a fantastic way to see the scenery from the water, and a unique chance to explore this remarkable cross-border landscape.
The area is also teeming with wildlife, making it a wonderful destination for nature lovers.
You might spot everything from moose and deer to chipmunks and even bears!

Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort
Waterton is a wonderfully traditional destination, where the focus is on the natural surroundings and an authentic Canadian experience rather than luxury. We stayed at the Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort, right in the heart of the village, just one street from the main row of shops and restaurants. It was quiet, clean and comfortable, with simple, no-frills rooms, and it’s ideal if you want to explore the village on foot.
We also saw the famous Prince of Wales Hotel, a historic property overlooking the town and Waterton Lake. It’s an iconic landmark and a bucket-list stay for many visitors, especially if you’re after a traditional Canadian mountain experience and spectacular views.
I’d highly recommend giving Waterton at least 3 nights. There’s lots to do, from stargazing experiences and national park walks that start right from the town, to Red Rock Canyon, which is about a 30-minute drive away. In the summer you can also enjoy water sports on Waterton Lake.

Boundary Ranch Kananaskis Country
If you’d love a taste of authentic Canadian ranch life without the time to stay on a working ranch, Boundary Ranch is the perfect fit. It’s a fantastic way to experience traditional Canadian and Western cowboy culture while you’re exploring Banff and the Canadian Rockies.
The ranch offers guided horse riding, alongside an on-site museum exploring the history of ranching in Canada and the important role horses played in the past.
I’m not a horse rider myself and, quite frankly, I’m scared of horses! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the team made the whole experience easy and welcoming. Everyone is paired with a horse and helped into the saddle before setting off on a peaceful, guided ride through the surrounding woodland. The ride lasts about an hour, with the horses travelling in single file at a gentle walking pace. They’re very experienced and know exactly what they’re doing, which makes it a great introduction for beginners.
It’s open to children aged six and above, so it works beautifully for families, as well as couples and adults looking to try something different. To round off the experience, lunch is cooked on the BBQ, with steak adding to that authentic Western feel.
Boundary Ranch is about an hour and a half from Calgary, and the drive is a highlight in itself. The route winds through spectacular mountain scenery, and we had sunshine, snow and rain all within an hour, which really showed off the unpredictable beauty of the Rockies!

Canmore
Canmore is a beautiful mountain town nestled in the Canadian Rockies, about 20 minutes from Banff. It has a more relaxed, local feel, with spectacular mountain views, a charming town centre and a great selection of independent shops, cafés, bars and restaurants.
It’s a fantastic base if you want to experience the Rockies with a slightly quieter atmosphere, and your holiday budget can often stretch further here than in Banff. The town has a lovely outdoor lifestyle, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling and wildlife spotting, and beautiful walking trails close to the town mean you can enjoy the mountains without having to travel far.
Helicopters and River Rafting
During our visit, we took a helicopter tour over the iconic Three Sisters mountains (Faith, Charity and Hope), an incredible way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Canadian Rockies from above. We also went river rafting along the Bow River, which makes Canmore a fantastic destination if you’d like to add a little adventure to your trip.
One of my highlights was the Grassi Lakes hike. The trail climbs through the mountains to two stunning turquoise-green lakes, surrounded by beautiful woodland and dramatic rock formations, with lovely views over the Bow Valley and Canmore along the way.
If you enjoy the outdoors and want to see some of the area’s most picturesque scenery, it’s a must.

Canmore Suites
We stayed at Canmore Suites during our visit, and I was fortunate enough to have one of the recently refurbished, modern rooms. It’s a comfortable, practical base for exploring Canmore, with everything you need within easy reach.
The location is a real plus. The shopping area is just across the railway tracks, so it’s easy to pop over for supplies, gifts or a bite to eat, and Canmore’s charming main street is only about a 15-minute walk away. It’s a great option if you like to explore on foot and enjoy the mix of independent shops, cafés and restaurants that the town has to offer.
The hotel sits close to a freight train line, which is part of Canmore’s character as a working mountain town. I had a peaceful two-night stay and didn’t hear anything during my time there.

Banff Town and Banff Avenue
Banff Avenue is the main street running through the heart of town, and it’s lined with shopping, cafés, bars and restaurants. The setting is beautiful, with the surrounding mountains providing a spectacular backdrop wherever you look.
Banff has a lovely atmosphere and feels like a traditional mountain town, combining outdoor adventure with plenty of places to shop, eat and relax. It’s a great destination if you want to enjoy the scenery without spending every day hiking or taking part in outdoor activities.

The Hoodoos
We also visited the Hoodoos, unusual rock formations shaped by erosion over thousands of years. The viewpoint offers lovely views across the Bow Valley, the surrounding forests and the Rocky Mountains.
It’s an easy stop to add to a sightseeing day, especially if you’re exploring the area by car.

Banff Gondola and Sulphur Mountain
One of the highlights of our visit was taking the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain, and it was an amazing experience! The gondola carries you high above the town, with incredible panoramic views of Banff, the Bow Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges.
At the summit, there are viewing platforms and boardwalks where you can take in the scenery from different viewpoints, and it really helps you appreciate the scale of the Canadian Rockies.
I’d highly recommend including it in your Banff itinerary. It’s a very popular attraction, so booking ahead is well worth it.

Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel
We finished our trip with a visit to the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, often referred to as Canada’s Castle in the Rockies.
This historic luxury hotel is set within the mountains and is famous for its grand architecture, beautiful interiors and impressive surroundings. It’s also well known for its ghost stories and its reputation as one of Canada’s most haunted hotels, which adds a little extra intrigue to a stay!
The hotel has a wonderful historic feel, with its traditional architecture and atmospheric hallways, while the rooms offer a lovely contrast: modern, luxurious and comfortable.
