Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ newest Super Ship, the S.S. Émile

Tricia and I were delighted to be invited to visit Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ newest Super Ship, the S.S. Émile , and it certainly did not disappoint.

Our day began with an early morning flight to Amsterdam. Travelling with hand luggage only made the journey smooth and efficient. From Schiphol Airport, we took the train to Amsterdam Central Station, a quick 20-minute journey costing just €7, followed by a pleasant 15-minute walk to the dock.

Upon boarding, we were warmly welcomed by the Uniworld team alongside fellow invited suppliers, before sitting down to a truly excellent lunch onboard. The afternoon featured insightful presentations from several luxury suppliers, including Ponant, Explora Journeys, Aqua Expeditions, Hurtigruten and Seabourn , offering a broader perspective on luxury cruising across the globe.

Following the presentations, we enjoyed a guided tour of the ship. The S.S. Émile is named after Émilie Flöge , the life partner and muse of famed artist Gustav Klimt . A highly creative and independent woman in her own right, her influence can be seen throughout the ship. From the bar, where her story is beautifully told, to the striking central staircase artwork, her spirit is woven elegantly into the design.

The ship accommodates 154 guests and is supported by an impressive 57 crew members . One thing that immediately stood out was the diverse and multinational crew, with a strong Dutch presence. There was a genuine sense of teamwork and pride among the staff, reflecting Uniworld’s commitment to looking after their people, something guests undoubtedly feel onboard.

Accommodation onboard is exceptional. The ship features:

35 French Balcony staterooms
12 Classic staterooms

The Deluxe French Balcony staterooms are located on the top deck, while the French Balcony cabins sit just below, with minimal difference aside from deck level. The Classic staterooms cleverly feature a mirror beneath the window to maximise light and space, a surprisingly effective design touch.

Honestly, every cabin category is beautifully finished, even the Classic staterooms, making them an excellent option for guests looking to balance luxury with value. We stayed in a French Balcony stateroom , where the window lowers at the push of a button, perfect for enjoying fresh air and river views.

While the renowned Savoir mattresses had unfortunately not arrived in time for our visit, the beds were still exceptionally comfortable. A thoughtful detail we loved was the optional bed divider, ideal for guests preferring a twin-bed feel while maintaining a sense of privacy.

The evening was spent relaxing in the bar, where we were entertained by a fantastic singer who quickly had everyone on their feet dancing, a wonderful way to end the day and experience the social atmosphere onboard.

Overall, our visit was a fantastic insight into Uniworld’s product. Their all-inclusive luxury offering truly ticks every box, making it an easy recommendation for clients seeking refined river cruising with exceptional service, dining and design.

LOS ANGELES A CITY OF CONTRASTS

Los Angeles may surprise you! Far more than just Hollywood glitz and glamour, this diverse city offers stunning beaches and fascinating hidden neighbourhoods that many visitors never discover.

You will definitely need to hire a car, but my first tip would be to leave the car behind for one day and use the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus tours to see all the famous sites without having to worry about parking. This is what we did on our last visit. These open-topped double-decker buses will take you on various routes encompassing Santa Monica, Downtown, Hollywood & Beverly Hills and, as the name suggests, you can hop off at any of the stops, explore further and then catch the next bus along.

There are a lot of hidden neighbourhoods in the city and if I had to pick just two of them, then Little Tokyo and Olvera Street would be my recommendations. The first is typical of this city's diversity: it's full of Japanese eateries, shops and cultural attractions. Similarly, Olvera Street pays homage to Los Angeles' original Spanish heritage and is a traffic-free area full of markets, shops, restaurants and mostly free museums that you can explore at your leisure.

COASTAL & MOUNTAINS

We were feeling quite adventurous, so we drove out to the San Gabriel Mountains (about an hour or so from central LA) and completed The Bridge To Nowhere walk, which is a 10-mile moderate round trip hike with great scenery, river crossings and canyon trails.

Of course, the beaches are world-famous and Newport Beach is probably my favourite, as there is a sense of community that surrounds it, but don't miss out on a relaxing stroll along the Venice Canals which are set back from Venice Beach.

THRILLS & ACCOMMODATION

I don't think an LA guide would be complete without mentioning its famous theme parks!

Disneyland stands as Walt's original vision, while Knott's Berry Farm offers a charming slice of California's oldest amusement park history. For thrill-seekers, Six Flags Magic Mountain delivers with its impressive collection of rollercoasters and the adjoining Hurricane Harbor waterpark.

However, if you're visiting just one park, I'd recommend Universal Studios Hollywood. Unlike its Orlando counterpart, the Hollywood experience centres around genuine filmmaking - you'll discover how movies come to life through special effects and stunt demonstrations. The park offers attractions suitable for all ages, making it both entertaining and educational.

Yes, this city is a huge urban sprawl, but there is so much to see in the neighbourhoods and parks around the city, and our teenagers were never bored during our trip. We stayed at The Hyatt Regency in Orange County, which has a rooftop swimming pool, basketball court and two pickleball courts plus an excellent deli and a great range of craft beers on tap in the Vita Bar. The hotel is an excellent choice for families as it has Two Bedroom Suites and interconnecting family rooms.

California revealed itself as a land of genuine surprises – where LA's diverse neighbourhoods offer unexpected delights, and where natural beauty exists alongside urban sophistication. What struck me most was how California rewards the curious traveller who ventures beyond the well-trodden tourist paths.

THAILAND'S PERFECT PAIRING

WHERE BAREFOOT LUXURY MEETS AUTHENTIC ISLAND LIFE

Our Thai honeymoon journey took us to two spectacular destinations – the serene shores of Koh Phagnan at the Anantara Rasananda and the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok at the Banyan Tree. Travelling in July proved perfect timing, as the East coast of Thailand enjoys ideal weather while the West battles monsoon season.

From the moment our journey began, luxury enveloped us. Whilst waiting for our speedboat transfer to the island, we relaxed in the Anantara lounge at the quayside. We were taken over to Koh Phangan and the boat literally dropped us at the shore where the hotel was located. The staff were waiting to greet us and carried our cases to our rooms. We were welcomed with a refreshing cocktail and our stay in paradise commenced. All rooms here have a private pool and we were taken to our pool suite, which was a perfect retreat to rest and relax. The relaxation continued down by the main pool which featured a pool bar so no need to leave the lovely cool water to get your Thai cocktail.

The great thing about this hotel is its location. Not only is it situated on the most gorgeous, white sand beach but within a couple of minutes, you are in the village centre. Here you will find a selection of restaurants and our favourite was Moonsoon, a Thai restaurant where one guy was serving who could hardly speak a word of English, but the food was to die for. The Rasananda has the most amazing jungle Spa. Nestled discreetly behind the resort, a collection of teak suites blends into the dramatic limestone landscape, each offering calming sea views and direct access to the gardens. This was most certainly the most relaxing experience I have ever had.

SKYSCRAPERS AND STREET MARKETS

After our stay in paradise, we took the boat back to Koh Samui to take our flight up to Bangkok for a 4-night stay. Bangkok is everything that I expected it to be. It's busy, hot and humid and completely fascinating. Our hotel was the Banyan Tree and this is a superb, modern property situated on South Sathon Road. There is an MRT underground station a 5-minute walk from the hotel so getting around is very easy. The Banyan Tree is a modern hotel and the rooms are beautifully furnished. After a long day exploring the city, you can relax up in the Moon Bar which is situated 61 floors above the city. The views from here are incredible and the cocktails are delicious.

A fun thing to do is to take a Tuk Tuk tour of the city which raced us around the bustling streets and stopped at the many markets. One of my highlights was the beautiful flower market where they taught us how to fold flower petals which is something that I never thought I would see my new husband do! If you are in Bangkok over a weekend, don't miss the Chatuchak Market which has over 8,000 stalls. It is split into sections so that makes it easier to find your way around. The best present I received was a £2.00 battery-operated fan as I was struggling to cope with the heat, but it was well worth the visit.

Thailand impressed me with its remarkable contrasts – from the serene sanctuary of a private pool villa to the vibrant energy of Bangkok's markets. This journey showcased why Thailand remains such a sought-after honeymoon destination, offering experiences that are truly distinctive.

ISLAND WELCOME

Barbados feels like catching up with an old friend – welcoming and familiar whether it's your first visit or fifteenth.

I stayed at The Fairmont last November and found it perfectly timed – glorious sunshine without high season prices. You're perched on what I think is the west coast's loveliest beach, just a stroll from the wonderful Lonestar restaurant where the seafood is simply divine.

If you prefer something more intimate, The Sandpiper and Coral Reef offer that special family-owned touch. Both are Small Luxury Hotels of the World members, and the staff remember your name and favourite cocktail from day one.

COASTAL ADVENTURES

What I love most about Barbados is how much there is to discover. Grab a mini moke for the day and just explore – it's such fun zipping along coastal roads with the wind in your hair! The contrast between the gentle Caribbean west coast and the wild Atlantic east coast feels like two holidays in one.

Pop to the Garrison Savannah for an afternoon at the races, catch some cricket at Kensington Oval, or wander Bridgetown's bustling streets. For dinner, Tides and Fish Pot offer gorgeous waterfront dining, but my secret favourite is taking the water taxi to La Cabane – think toes-in-the-sand dining, fantastic local music and proper Bajan cuisine.

BAJAN BLISS

My top tip? Consider splitting your time between Barbados and a Sea Dream yacht cruise. I did this in March and it was magical – a few nights on the island followed by a 7-night Barbados-to-Barbados cruise exploring tiny Grenadine islands. With just 112 guests and the same number of crew, it's luxury without pretension.

If you do, promise me you'll try sleeping under the stars in one of their Balinese beds. Drifting off to the gentle lapping of waves beneath a blanket of stars is something you'll remember forever.

Barbados captures everything I love about Caribbean travel - that perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, with a dash of luxury and genuine local culture. TANTALISING TANZANIA

SAFARI SPLENDOUR

I'm still on cloud nine after returning from Tanzania—a journey that truly exceeded all my expectations. This is one of those trips that makes you realise just how incredible Africa is, with memories I'll treasure for years to come.

Travelling in early October proved perfect—the dry season made wildlife easier to spot as they gathered around water sources, yet we avoided the peak-season crowds. Our adventure began in Arusha at the charming African Tulip, before heading to Tarangire National Park. This lesser-known gem surprised us with its impressive elephant herds and distinctive baobab-studded landscape.

The Sopa Lodge offered comfortable accommodation and stunning sunset views across the park. The Serengeti was the absolute highlight. Staying at Kubu Kubu Tented Camp was wonderful—we'd watch zebra, elephant and giraffe wander past while having morning coffee on our private deck. The outside shower was quite an experience!

If you're considering one splurge, make it the hot air balloon safari. Drifting above the plains at dawn, watching wildlife below, gave us a completely different perspective on this magnificent landscape.

CRATER TO COAST

The Ngorongoro Crater offered yet another distinct ecosystem—this ancient volcanic caldera creates a natural enclosure teeming with wildlife. From our base at Kitela Lodge, we descended into the crater for excellent game viewing, including sightings of the endangered black rhino.

After several days of safari adventures, Zanzibar provided the perfect conclusion. LUX* Marijani exceeded expectations with its beautiful beach setting. We spent days snorkelling, swimming and simply unwinding. The seafood was exceptional—caught that morning and on your plate by evening!

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Tanzania works well year-round, though the dry season (June to October) offers the best wildlife viewing. Early October gave us the perfect balance of excellent game viewing without peak season crowds. Ensure your passport has at least six months' validity for your Tanzania visa. I would strongly recommend arranging the e-visa before travelling.

Pack neutral-coloured clothing in lightweight, breathable fabrics. Early mornings can be surprisingly cool, so layers are essential. Don't forget binoculars, a good camera, wide-brimmed hat, and high-factor sunscreen. A beach stay after safari provides the perfect balance—allowing you to reflect on your wildlife experiences whilst unwinding on pristine shores.

ANTIGUA BEACH PARADISE

PARADISE FOUND ANTIGUA'S BEACHES

When clients ask about Antigua, I always mention its claim to fame - 365 beaches, one for every day of the year! While I can't promise I've visited them all personally, the ones I have seen are spectacular.

Half Moon Bay remains a favourite recommendation for those seeking natural beauty away from the crowds. The distinctive crescent shape and spectrum of blues in the water create a postcard-perfect scene. For those staying near English Harbour, I often suggest Pigeon Point - a lovely stretch of sand where you can watch the comings and goings of elegant yachts.

For families, Dickenson Bay offers excellent amenities and water sports, while those seeking more seclusion might prefer Hermitage Bay or Galley Bay. What surprises many of my clients is learning that all beaches in Antigua are public - even those fronting luxury resorts. Sometimes finding the access path requires a bit of local knowledge, but the reward is worth it!

BEYOND THE BEACH

What makes Antigua truly special is how much there is to explore beyond those glorious shores. History enthusiasts appreciate Nelson's Dockyard - the only Georgian dockyard still in operation in the world. I always recommend clients take the time to explore English Harbour and climb up to Shirley Heights Lookout for that iconic view across the bay. Sunday evenings at Shirley Heights are legendary, with steel pan music, barbecue food, and Dark and Stormy cocktails as the sun sets.

WHEN TO VISIT

Antigua enjoys warm temperatures year-round, but I find April particularly special. Not only is the weather perfect, but Antigua Sailing Week brings a vibrant atmosphere to the island. Even if you're not a sailor, watching the classic yachts cut through the Caribbean waters is a spectacular sight.

Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway, family holiday, or a bit of Caribbean history and culture, Antigua delivers with gracious charm. As I tell all my clients - hire a car for at least a day or two, find your perfect beach, arrange for a designated driver if sampling local refreshments, and embrace the island's gentle pace. NORWAY'S MARITIME MAGIC

SAILING THE FJORDS

My recent Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard P&O's Iona was a trip to remember. The combination of dramatic landscapes and charming ports made for a great holiday.

April turned out to be a great time to visit - we had the best of both worlds with snow-capped mountains creating classic Norwegian scenery, plus several sunny days. One thing I really appreciated was how the ship docks right in the centre of each town - no need for shuttles or taxis!

Iona is perfect for this itinerary with her floor-to-ceiling windows in the Grand Atrium - giving you wonderful views as you sail through the fjords.

PORT DISCOVERIES

Olden was definitely the standout port for me. I recommend being up early for the sail-in - watching the sunrise as we glided through the narrow fjord with mountains on both sides was worth losing a bit of sleep for. The Olden Skylift is excellent - the views across the snow-covered peaks and blue fjord below are simply stunning. There was still plenty of snow at the top in April, so good walking boots are a must.

Stavanger, known as the 'Cradle of the Vikings', gives you a great introduction to Norwegian heritage. The view of Pulpit Rock is quite something - that sheer drop to the fjord below certainly gets your heart racing! Ålesund was a lovely surprise with its distinctive Art Nouveau buildings. After a devastating fire in 1904, they rebuilt the entire city in this style. Climbing to the Mount Aksla viewpoint takes some effort - yes, it's 418 steps - but the view of the city spread across all those islands is worth it.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Haugesund offers an interesting mix of Viking history and modern Norwegian life. The waterfront area has some nice shops and cafés - perfect for a relaxed day of exploring. Pack for all weather conditions. I needed everything from t-shirts on sunny days to my winter coat, hat and gloves on the chillier ones. Layers are definitely the way to go.

For anyone thinking about this cruise, I'd highly recommend it. The natural beauty of Norway, combined with interesting ports and the comfort of returning to Iona each evening, makes for a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

Norway's fjords are truly nature at its most spectacular - I was constantly reaching for my camera as each view seemed more impressive than the last! BERMUDA ATLANTIC GEM

ISLAND DISCOVERIES

This little gem of an island has become a true favourite of mine after four memorable stays. Unlike what many assume, Bermuda is actually an archipelago in the North Atlantic, not the Caribbean, with its distinctive fishhook shape formed by a series of bridges and causeways connecting numerous islets. A direct flight takes just over six hours from London, and Bermuda pairs perfectly with New York, Boston or Toronto for an elegant two-centre holiday.

Accommodation options range from unique, small independent hotels to prestigious international brands including Rosewood and St. Regis. With its mild climate, Bermuda welcomes visitors year-round, catering admirably to honeymooners, golf enthusiasts, walking aficionados, diving enthusiasts, families and couples alike.

EXPERIENCES & CULTURAL HERITAGE

I highly recommend climbing Gibbs Hill Lighthouse for spectacular views across the islands, or walking the nature trails along the south shore, which provide magnificent vantage points overlooking the signature pink sand beaches—Horseshoe Bay is a particular stunner!

Bermuda is proud of its rich cultural tapestry influenced by Portuguese, British, African, West Indian and Native American traditions. St. George's, in the northern region, has earned UNESCO World Heritage designation, with numerous structures preserved in their original condition for over four centuries.

The Royal Naval Dockyard has been sympathetically redeveloped with museums, restaurants and shopping opportunities. It's the ideal place to browse locally made gifts, visit the glass blowing factory, and taste (and purchase) the delicious local Bermuda Rum Cake.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Bermuda offers two national drinks: the Rum Swizzle and my personal favourite, the Dark 'n' Stormy. I suggest trying them whilst taking in the view from the terrace overlooking Hamilton Harbour at The Pickled Onion, a smart little restaurant offering casual dining.

Did you know there are seven world-class golf courses on this modest-sized island? For something a little different, consider Helmet Diving—suitable for all ages, it provides an amazing glimpse into the undersea world for those who prefer to keep their feet on the sandy bottom of the sea.

Buses and ferries are plentiful and easy to use when exploring the island—ask your concierge about a three-day pass for convenience. And a practical tip: if you're a member of the National Trust, take your membership card with you for reduced entry to various historical sites across Bermuda.

VIETNAM UNVEILED

NORTHERN TREASURES

Last month, I travelled across Vietnam, experiencing everything from the colonial elegance of Hanoi to the pristine beaches of Con Dao. As someone who's explored Southeast Asia extensively, Vietnam still managed to surprise me with its remarkable diversity and authentic charm.

My journey took me through Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An, Con Dao, and Ho Chi Minh City, staying at some exceptional properties including the historic Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi and the secluded Six Senses on Con Dao island. I would, however, caution about timing – my September visit found me caught between two typhoons! For optimal weather, I'd recommend travelling between November and April when rainfall is generally minimal across most regions.

In Hanoi, don't miss the theatrical performance of Train Street, where locomotives rumble through a narrow residential corridor with cafés and shops literally within arm's reach of the passing trains. It's simultaneously exhilarating and slightly terrifying!

CENTRAL DELIGHTS

What makes Vietnam special is its seamless blend of experiences – bustling metropolitan energy transitions to tranquil landscapes, ancient temples stand alongside colonial architecture, and throughout it all, you'll encounter some of the warmest hospitality in Asia.

Vietnamese cuisine deserves its stellar reputation, but to truly appreciate it, you must venture beyond hotel restaurants. In Hanoi, I joined a guided food tour through the Old Quarter, squeezing through narrow alleyways to sample authentic dishes like Banh Goi (fried dumplings) and various Nem (spring rolls). There's something magical about dining elbow-to-elbow with locals on tiny plastic stools as motorbikes zip by.

What fascinated me was Vietnam's distinct regional personalities, evident even in something as seemingly universal as coffee: In Ho Chi Minh City, the iced coffee with condensed milk offers a perfect harmony between bitter coffee and rich sweetness. Up north in Hanoi, egg coffee—born from wartime necessity—presents like a golden cappuccino with a silky egg cream sweetened with honey. But the revelation was Hue's salt coffee—comparable to liquid salted caramel with a delicate bitter-sweet balance that had me seeking it out daily.

SOUTHERN EXPERIENCES

My personal highlight came at Six Senses Con Dao, where I participated in their turtle conservation programme. Between April and October, mother turtles lay eggs on the resort's beaches, and guests can help release hatchlings into the ocean—a profoundly moving wildlife encounter that feels like a rare privilege.

For those considering their own Vietnamese adventure, two practical tips: First, verify luggage allowances before domestic flights. Con Dao's tiny airport accepts only cash for excess baggage charges, with no ATM on premises—a lesson I learned the hard way! Second, build in time for Hoi An's famous tailoring services. The efficiency is remarkable—select your fabric and design in the morning, and many establishments will have your bespoke garment ready by the following day.

Vietnam offers that increasingly rare travel experience—genuine cultural immersion alongside comfortable luxury. AUTHENTIC CHARM

Grenada won me over with its genuine warmth and natural beauty. This "Spice Island" feels wonderfully authentic, without the crowds you'll find on more commercial Caribbean islands.

Don't miss the spice market in St. George's – yes, it's rather warm inside but absolutely worth it! The vibrant colours and rich aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves create a sensory experience you won't find anywhere else in the Caribbean.

NATURAL WONDERS

I was amazed by Grenada's dramatic landscape. Despite being just 21 miles long, you'll discover lush rainforests, gorgeous waterfalls and volcanic crater lakes. Grand Etang Lake sits in an extinct volcano crater, surrounded by hiking trails where cheeky Mona monkeys play overhead.

If you enjoy diving, you're in for a treat. The Bianca C wreck (known as the "Titanic of the Caribbean") offers an extraordinary underwater experience, while the sculpture park creates an eerily beautiful artificial reef. With so many shipwrecks in warm, clear waters, it's no wonder they call Grenada the "Wreck Capital of the Eastern Caribbean."

ISLAND HOSPITALITY

I love how compact the island is – both top-notch hotels are just 15 minutes from the airport, which feels like such a blessing after your flight. For somewhere special to stay, I particularly love the Calabash – a Relais & Châteaux property with beautiful grounds and spacious suites.

Spice Island Beach Resort is another gem, perfectly positioned on Grand Anse Beach and still lovingly managed by the Hopkins family. Both offer that wonderful Grenadian warmth that makes you feel like family rather than just another guest.

SOUTH AFRICAN SPLENDOUR

COSTAL BEGINNINGS

South Africa was absolutely brilliant! Let me share the highlights from my journey through this amazing country.

I started at a lovely 5* boutique hotel right on Thompson Bay Beach in Balito (KwaZulu-Natal). It's on the "Dolphin Coast" north of Durban. The hotel was gorgeous and I especially loved evening drinks on the terrace watching the sunset while enjoying their delicious seafood canapes.

We popped to the famous Oyster Box hotel in Umhlanga Rocks for dinner one night. It's quite grand but not stuffy at all. Their curry buffet was fantastic - apparently Durban is known for its curries because of the large Indian community there.

The hotel has a resident cat called Skebenga who wandered in years ago and never left! The staff showed us photos of his birthday parties - yes, actual birthday parties for a cat! He's become quite the local celebrity.

WILDLIFE & HISTORY

Next we headed inland to Zululand and stayed at Valley Lodge in Babanango Game Reserve. The whole lodge area is fenced from the main reserve, which makes it great for families as you can walk around freely without worrying about bumping into anything with sharp teeth!

Our guide was brilliant - he knew absolutely everything about the wildlife and plants. My first walking safari was both terrifying and amazing - you see everything so differently on foot!

The best moment was watching a mother cheetah with three cubs just metres from our vehicle. We sat completely still for about 20 minutes watching them stalk some impala. Incredible!

I didn't think I'd be that interested in the Anglo-Zulu War history, but our battlefield tour at Fugitives Drift (Rorke's Drift) was fascinating! The guides made it all come alive - it was like watching a film but you're standing right where it all happened.

The lodge itself was really homely, with big fireplaces and family-style dinners where we chatted with other guests and the owners. It felt more like staying with friends than at a hotel.

MOUNTAIN MAJESTY

Our last stop was Montusi Mountain Lodge in the Northern Drakensberg. The scenery here is just stunning - huge rock faces and rolling green hills. My cottage had the most amazing views!

I went on a morning hike to see some ancient San rock paintings. Some are thousands of years old but still so clear!

The mountain air was lovely and fresh after the heat of the game reserves.

South Africa is definitely a place I want to go back to. There's such variety - beaches, wildlife, mountains, all within a few hours' drive of each other. And everyone was so friendly and welcoming!

I fell in love with South Africa's incredible diversity - from coastal sunsets to safari encounters and mountain vistas. It really does offer something for everyone! AUSTRALIA'S EAST COAST

ISLAND PARADISE DISCOVERIES

I've fallen completely in love with Australia's East Coast after exploring it twice now – first in October 2022, and most recently in late 2024 when I decided to focus on island-hopping along the Great Barrier Reef. There's something magical about this coastline that keeps drawing me back!

My recent journey began in Brisbane at The Point before flying to Lady Elliot Island for two incredible nights in a reef suite. This tiny coral cay sits at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, and swimming with manta rays here was genuinely one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Watching these graceful creatures glide past me underwater felt like being in another world entirely.

FRASER ISLAND ADVENTURES

From there, I headed to K'gari (Fraser Island) and stayed at Kingfisher Bay Resort. As the world's largest sand island, K'gari is unlike anywhere else – we bounced along 75 Mile Beach in a 4WD, cooled off in the impossibly clear waters of Lake McKenzie, and I even spotted a dingo from a safe distance!

If I had to pick a favourite spot (which is nearly impossible), Heron Island would win my heart. I spent three wonderful nights there and loved being able to step directly onto the reef at low tide. The island does important work with turtle conservation too, and the stargazing was simply breathtaking without city lights spoiling the view.

WHITSUNDAYS AND BEYOND

Hamilton Island offered a different vibe with my self-catering apartment giving me the flexibility to either cook or enjoy the island's lovely restaurants. The Whitsundays region is ridiculously photogenic – Whitehaven Beach with its swirling white sands looks exactly like those perfect postcards!

I've also explored Green Island (perfect for a day trip from Cairns), and Magnetic Island where a 10km hike rewarded me with sightings of wild koala families – such a special moment! Of course, no Queensland trip would be complete without visiting Australia Zoo, where Steve Irwin's conservation legacy lives on.

RAINFOREST MEETS REEF

My journey continued north to Cape Tribulation Safari Lodge, where I experienced something truly special – the ancient Daintree Rainforest literally meets the Great Barrier Reef. Going crocodile spotting on the Daintree River was both thrilling and slightly terrifying – these creatures are seriously impressive up close!

A place many travellers overlook is Yeppoon, a charming coastal town near Rockhampton. It makes the perfect stopover between Brisbane and Cairns, with access to Great Keppel Island – a quieter, less-visited slice of the Great Barrier Reef that feels wonderfully peaceful.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS

My top tip for anyone planning their own Australian adventure is to remember just how massive the country is! Don't try to see everything in one trip – each region deserves time to be properly explored and enjoyed. Driving is wonderfully straightforward (on the left, just like home), and the current exchange rate makes Australia surprisingly affordable for dining, shopping and activities.

Australia truly delivers on its bucket list promise – whether you're face-to-face with marine life on the Great Barrier Reef, spotting koalas in the wild, or watching the sunset paint the sky from a beautiful coastal viewpoint. It's a place that gets under your skin in the best possible way, and I'm already dreaming about my next visit to explore the west coast and Uluru!

ISLAND TREASURES

Jamaica wraps you in its embrace with dramatic mountains, lush rainforests and golden beaches kissed by crystal-clear waters. For a bit of value, try visiting between November and mid-December when the weather's gorgeous but the crowds haven't arrived.

There's so much beyond those famous beaches! Float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft while your guide shares local stories – it's a wonderfully peaceful way to see the island's green heart. Feeling more adventurous? Climb Dunn's River Falls where the cool cascading water and breath-taking views reward every step.

NATURAL WONDERS

The Luminous Lagoon absolutely must go on your list – seeing the water glow blue around your fingertips at night feels like pure magic. Then there's the Blue Hole with its inviting turquoise waters where you can channel your inner Tarzan swinging from vines, or take a quick hike to discover the hidden Secret Falls.

Seven Mile Beach in Negril has that perfect powdery sand and calm, clear water that's heavenly for swimming and snorkelling. While you're there, sunset at Rick's Café is a must – sipping a perfect rum punch while watching brave locals dive from impossibly high cliffs as the sun melts into the sea.

JAMAICAN SPIRIT

Music lovers shouldn't miss the Bob Marley Museum for a glimpse into the island's rich musical soul. The Blue Mountains offer fantastic hiking and zip-lining adventures through coffee plantations producing some of the world's most coveted beans.

For somewhere special to stay, I adore The Caves with its clifftop suites carved into the rock. Half Moon remains a classic with its beautiful grounds, while GoldenEye (where Ian Fleming wrote his Bond novels) offers discreet luxury. Couples Swept Away is perfect for romantics with its expansive beachfront.

GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

RHODES BLISS

Oh, this holiday was exactly what we needed! A week at The Ixian Suites and Spa in Rhodes was pure sunshine heaven. As an adults-only hotel right on the beach, it was the perfect place to simply relax and recharge.

We visited in July when it was super-hot - ideal for enjoying the amazing pool area. I loved that the beach was literally steps away too, giving us brilliant options each day. The food was a real highlight - we went half-board and enjoyed a different themed buffet each evening. From traditional Greek dishes to Asian fusion nights, everything was delicious and there was loads of it!

BEYOND THE SUNBEDS

We did manage to tear ourselves away from the hotel to explore Rhodes Town - it's only a quick 15-minute taxi ride away. My little insider tip: go early morning (before 10am) when there aren't cruise ships in port. We practically had those beautiful medieval streets to ourselves and wandered around the Palace of the Grand Master without any crowds.

One thing I absolutely loved about The Ixian was being just 20 minutes from the airport. We were poolside with our first cocktails while other travellers were still on their way to their hotels! That's definitely the perfect way to start a holiday!

ACCOMMODATION CHOICES

Mauritius offers a wonderful blend of luxurious retreats, cultural experiences and natural beauty that makes it a standout Indian Ocean destination.

For couples seeking romance, Paradise Cove provides an intimate atmosphere with its adults-only policy, while Maradiva's private villa experience offers ultimate seclusion. Dina Robin and Victoria Beachcomber also excel at creating romantic settings with exceptional service.

Families are equally well-catered for with Heritage Awali offering outstanding kids' clubs and activities. Long Beach, Lux Grand Gaube, and Shangri-La Le Touessrok all provide excellent family-friendly facilities while maintaining that sense of tropical luxury.

SEASONAL CONSIDERATIONS

The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to September, though it's worth noting that July and August can be quite breezy on the South and East coasts.

The cyclone season runs from November to April, with January to March being the peak period.

Interestingly, many travellers still choose to visit during these months – and for good reason. The temperatures are warmer and the vegetation is lushly green. While there is a risk of tropical storms, many days remain perfectly sunny, and when rain does come, it's often short-lived rather than lasting all day.

Many of my clients have enjoyed wonderful holidays during this period, particularly in December which offers a lovely tropical Christmas escape.

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS

Mauritius boasts some truly superb sandy beaches, with Flic en Flac on the west coast being particularly popular. However, there's so much more beyond the perfect shorelines.

The Black River Gorges National Park is fantastic for walking enthusiasts, with hiking trails that wind through lush vegetation past stunning waterfalls. The birdlife here is exceptional – keep an eye out for the rare pink pigeon, a conservation success story.

For marine adventures, the west coast offers wonderful dolphin and whale watching excursions. I've had some magical encounters with spinner dolphins here, watching them play in their natural environment. Blue Marine Park provides excellent snorkelling opportunities with its vibrant coral gardens and abundant sea life – a genuine underwater paradise.

Plant enthusiasts shouldn't miss the botanical gardens with their impressive variety of tropical species, including giant water lilies and numerous palm varieties.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

The island's cultural diversity is reflected in its capital, Port Louis – a bustling hub of activity where you can sample local restaurants and browse the markets for authentic crafts and souvenirs. For a more spiritual experience, Grand Bassin's sacred Hindu site offers fascinating cultural insights.

Mauritian cuisine deserves special mention – a delicious blend of Indian, Chinese and Creole influences. Most hotels offer international dishes as well, but do venture out to try local specialities for a true taste of the island.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

A few practical tips from my experiences: bring beach shoes as the coral can be quite sharp (sea urchins are also sometimes present); always confirm taxi costs beforehand (the local buses are much cheaper and provide a more authentic experience); and while English and French are widely spoken, a few words of Creole are always appreciated.

Don't forget to pack a good insect repellent, and stick to bottled water for drinking. The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee, though US dollars and Euros are accepted in some tourist areas.

The west coast generally offers calmer waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling, being more sheltered from the trade winds. However, if you're seeking more untouched landscapes, the south coast provides a wilder, more rugged beauty that's equally captivating in its own way.

Whether you're looking for romantic seclusion, family adventures, or cultural immersion, Mauritius delivers with a warmth that goes beyond its tropical climate – it's found in the genuine hospitality of its people and the diverse experiences this special island offers.

ICELAND IN WINTER

ICELAND WONDERS

Let me tell you about Iceland in February - it's absolutely magical! We stayed at the Fosshotel Reykjavík, which was perfect for all our adventures - warm, comfy and right where we needed to be.

I can't even describe how incredible the landscape is. One minute you're passing these steaming geothermal fields that look like something from another planet, then suddenly you're standing in front of these huge waterfalls, half-frozen in time.

We did the Golden Circle tour (you know, the classic Gullfoss, Geysir, Þingvellir circuit), but honestly? The South Coast tour was my favourite - those black sand beaches and basalt columns are just stunning.

ICELANDS HIDDEN GEMS

If you go, make sure you visit the village of Vik - its black beaches were so much quieter than the famous ones, and those sea stacks rising from the ocean make for the most amazing photos. And yes! We saw the Northern Lights! Not on our first try, but the second night, there they were - this dancing green curtain across the sky. I was torn between grabbing my camera and just standing there with my jaw dropped!

February's actually one of the best times to see the lights while still having enough daylight for exploring. Just remember - layers, layers, layers! And gloves for taking photos (learned that one the hard way!). Oh, and save space in your suitcase for one of those gorgeous Icelandic wool sweaters - I practically live in mine now!

WILD ENCOUNTERS

DAWN DISCOVERIES

I still can't believe I actually experienced South Africa! My trip to Thanda Private Game Reserve in June 2023 was absolutely incredible and completely exceeded my expectations.

Every morning began with a gentle wake-up call while it was still dark outside. I'd quickly throw on layers (those morning drives can be cold!) before being escorted to reception where a hot coffee and the fluffiest blanket for the game drive awaited. These thoughtful touches made such a difference to the experience!

The African sunrise is something I'll never forget – that vibrant orange glow spreading across the savannah each morning was simply breath-taking. And the wildlife! One day we spotted hyenas skulking near the road, then a cheetah lounging in the grass, and finally a tower of giraffes (yes, that's actually what a group of them is called – I learned so much!).

UNFORGETTABLE ENCOUNTERS

On another drive, we had the most amazing elephant encounter when a massive bull walked straight toward our vehicle. Our guide whispered for us to stay completely still, and I could actually hear the elephant's breathing as he passed by – talk about a heart-stopping moment!

But the absolute highlight came on our final game drive when we stumbled upon lion cubs playing near their mother. Their wobbly little legs and curious eyes had me reaching for my camera while trying not to squeal with excitement.

I've discovered that South Africa has a way of getting under your skin. Yes, those early mornings were a bit of a struggle, but I wouldn't have missed a single drive. Each one brought something completely new and unexpected – that's the magic of the wild.

I've definitely caught the safari bug and am already dreaming about my next African adventure!

KRAKOW CULTURAL CHARM

CITY CHARM & ACCOMMODATION

I fell in love with Krakow during my 4-night stay in July! If you're considering a European city break, I'd thoroughly recommend this Polish gem.

I opted for a lovely 4-star hotel just 10 minutes by train from the city centre - a brilliant choice that gave us excellent value while keeping everything within easy reach.

What struck me most about Krakow was how beautifully it balances history with natural splendour. The Old Town is absolutely stunning - a UNESCO World Heritage site with a magnificent central square surrounded by medieval architecture that tells centuries of stories. The atmosphere is wonderfully vibrant yet relaxed.

DAY TRIPS & ATTRACTIONS

My absolute highlight was a day trip to Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains. The scenery is simply breath-taking, with walks suited to all abilities. I would recommend arriving early though, as it gets rather busy in summer. A top tip: pre-book your Gubałówka funicular tickets to skip those queues!

Auschwitz is accessible as a day trip for those interested in this important historical site, while the fascinating Wieliczka Salt Mines offer an extraordinary glimpse into centuries of mining history. For both, I'd recommend booking through official websites and arranging transport separately.

I was genuinely impressed by the food scene! Plenty of traditional Polish restaurants (the pierogi are a must-try!) alongside international options. Even better, many places catered brilliantly for dietary requirements - fellow gluten-free travellers won't struggle here at all.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Getting around couldn't be easier or more affordable. The public transport is excellent - reliable, frequent and remarkably cheap. That said, pack comfortable shoes as Krakow is perfect for wandering on foot.

Consider a boat trip along the River Vistula for a different perspective of the city, and don't miss the surprising street art tucked away in certain neighbourhoods. The nightlife is brilliant too, ranging from cosy traditional taverns to more lively contemporary spots.

Though not as vast as some European capitals, Krakow packs a wonderful punch with its blend of history, culture and natural beauty. It's perfect for a short break that feels both enriching and refreshing!

COASTAL TREASURES

Kefalonia is a true Ionian treasure - the largest of these Greek islands with endless things to do and see. Having had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful place, I've seen firsthand how natural beauty meets authentic Greek charm.

The horseshoe bay of Myrtos Beach is spectacular - arriving early morning before the crowds is my top recommendation. The contrast between those brilliant white pebbles and the blue water is something no photograph can truly capture. That first glimpse from the cliff-top road quite literally takes your breath away.

Assos remains one of my favourite spots on the island. This small, colourful village wrapped around a perfect bay feels almost like a secret discovery. I love suggesting clients enjoy lunch at one of the waterfront tavernas before climbing to the old Venetian castle for panoramic views that are well worth the effort.

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS

One of Kefalonia's most magical experiences is Melissani Cave with its underground lake. When the midday sun shines through the collapsed roof, the water glows an ethereal blue that seems almost otherworldly.

For authentic village life, I often recommend Katelios - it strikes that perfect balance between local charm and visitor amenities. Argostoli, the capital, offers a different experience, and I always suggest clients head to the harbour early morning to watch the loggerhead turtles feeding.

What makes Kefalonia really special is its unhurried pace and genuine hospitality. Meals become leisurely affairs, conversations with locals flow naturally, and you'll often find yourself gifted homemade desserts or a glass of Robola, the island's excellent local wine.

ZIMBABWE CALLING

AUTHENTIC AFRICA

Having explored Zimbabwe numerous times over the years, both for pleasure and professionally, I'm always struck by how this remarkable country continues to surprise even seasoned safari-goers. From the thundering Victoria Falls to the wildlife-rich expanses of Hwange and Mana Pools, Zimbabwe offers authentic experiences that many of Africa's more commercial destinations simply can't match.

The Falls themselves are, of course, spectacular – locally known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' or 'The Smoke That Thunders', which perfectly describes the plumes of mist visible from miles away. A little insider tip: make strategic use of the viewing platforms along the walking trail for the best photo opportunities without getting completely drenched (though a rain poncho is still advisable!).

For accommodation, you're spoilt for choice between the colonial grandeur of Victoria Falls Hotel with its Edwardian charm, the more contemporary Victoria Falls Safari Club, or the welcoming Ilala Lodge – all offering their own particular character.

Do treat yourself to a helicopter flight over the Falls – the locals call it "the Flight of Angels" after David Livingstone's famous quote, and it truly is the only way to appreciate the sheer scale and drama of this natural wonder. In the evening, The Boma dinner and drum show provides a delightfully theatrical introduction to local cuisine and culture – yes, it's designed for tourists, but it's enormous fun and the food is excellent.

For the more adventurous, the Outlook Café offers zip-lining and the Flying Fox experience, alongside exceptional views over Batoka Gorge. There's nothing quite like sipping a cold Zambezi lager while watching the sun set over the gorge after an adrenaline-fueled afternoon!

HWANGE & MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK

Hwange National Park

Hwange boasts the highest elephant concentration after neighbouring Botswana's Chobe National Park, and the interactions between these family herds are simply fascinating to observe. I've stayed at Verney's, Somalisa and Davison's Camps over the years, each offering a slightly different experience but all providing that perfect mix of comfort and wilderness immersion.

One of my fondest memories is lying in bed at Somalisa, listening to lions calling around the camp – simultaneously terrifying and thrilling! The guides in Hwange are among Africa's best, many having grown up in the area with an intimate knowledge of the landscape and its residents that comes from a lifetime of observation.

Mana Pools National Park

For the more adventurous safari enthusiast, Mana Pools offers Zimbabwe's premier walking safari experience. Nyamatusi and Kanga Camp both provide excellent bases for exploration, with Kanga's waterhole attracting a constant procession of wildlife during the dry season.

Taking a canoe along the Zambezi here is not for the faint-hearted – drifting silently past pods of grunting hippo certainly focuses the mind! But the birdlife is extraordinary, and if you're lucky, you might witness the famous 'ballerina' elephants who have adapted to stand on their hind legs to reach the sweetest leaves at the top of the trees – a behaviour seen nowhere else in Africa.

LAKE KARIBA

Spending a few days on a houseboat on Lake Kariba is the perfect way to wind down after the excitement of game viewing. The Karabezi and Big Daddy houseboats offer different levels of luxury, but both provide that magical experience of cruising among the skeletal, partially submerged trees that create such an otherworldly landscape.

Watching the sun set over the lake, turning the sky into a canvas of oranges and pinks while fish eagles call overhead, is simply 'mushi' (as the locals would say – meaning wonderful or excellent in Shona). The fishing is superb for those so inclined, and the game viewing along the shoreline can be remarkable – huge herds of buffalo coming down to drink, elephants swimming between islands, and predators stalking the shallows.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Zimbabwe works well year-round, though May to September offers more moderate temperatures. October through April can be searingly hot (often exceeding 38°C) but brings lush landscapes and newborn animals.

Do pack in layers – early mornings on game drives can be surprisingly chilly even in summer, while afternoons bake. Neutral-coloured clothing is best for wildlife viewing. Don't forget mosquito repellent, a broad-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen.

Ensure your passport has at least six months' validity and three blank pages for your Zimbabwe visa, which you'll obtain on arrival. Have your flight details and first accommodation address ready for the immigration forms.

Zimbabwe may have faced its share of challenges over the years, but the warmth of its people, the professionalism of its safari industry, and the raw beauty of its landscapes make it a destination that continues to capture my heart with every visit.

ALBERTA'S ALPINE SPLENDOUR

Last autumn, I embarked on a journey through Alberta's magnificent Rocky Mountain corridor, timing my visit to coincide with the golden splendour of September and October. This proved to be a masterstroke – fewer crowds than summer, brilliant foliage transforming the landscapes, and evenings cool enough to justify crackling log fires and marshmallow-toasting sessions under star-filled skies.

My adventure took me from Calgary through the iconic mountain towns of Banff and Lake Louise, before venturing along the breath-taking Icefields Parkway to Jasper. I experienced a wonderful range of accommodation, from the urban comfort of Sandman Signature in Calgary to the rustic elegance of Storm Mountain Lodge with its heritage cabins. The legendary Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise lived up to its reputation for grandeur, while Tekarra Lodge in Jasper and Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff offered that perfect balance of wilderness immersion with thoughtful comfort.

NATURAL WONDERS

Alberta's landscapes feel almost cinematically perfect – towering mountains, glacial lakes of an impossible blue, and valleys that stretch toward distant horizons. Yet what truly distinguishes this region is the genuine possibility of meaningful wildlife encounters. Keeping a respectful distance, I was fortunate enough to observe elk, mountain goats, and even a black bear foraging alongside the Icefields Parkway.

The Jasper SkyTram delivers an experience that simply shouldn't be missed. Ascending to 2,263 metres provides access to alpine terrain that would otherwise demand serious mountaineering skills. From the upper station, well-maintained boardwalks allow you to soak in panoramic views across six mountain ranges, while more ambitious hikers can continue to Whistlers Summit for an even more spectacular perspective.

HIDDEN GEMS

For something truly special that most visitors overlook, I highly recommend the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary near Cochrane. Their interactive tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of these magnificent creatures that are part wolf, part dog. It's an educational experience that also supports important conservation work.

When it comes to dining, The Grizzly House in Banff provides a quintessentially Canadian experience. This quirky establishment specialises in fondue and hot rock cooking featuring game meats that reflect Alberta's wild heritage. Where else might you sample elk, bison, and even alligator in a single meal? The rustic alpine décor and friendly atmosphere make for a memorable evening.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

A few practical notes: You'll need a National Park Pass for entry to Banff, Jasper, and Yoho National Parks – easily purchased online before arrival or at park gates. While public transport options do exist, I'd strongly recommend hiring a car for maximum flexibility. The driving is straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage.

The Icefields Parkway connecting Lake Louise to Jasper deserves special mention – arguably one of the world's most spectacular driving routes. While technically possible to cover in a few hours, this would be an opportunity squandered. Plan for a full day minimum, allowing time to stop at highlights like Peyto Lake, Bow Summit, and the Columbia Icefield. Keep your camera close but your binoculars closer – wildlife sightings along this route are frequent and thrilling.

Alberta delivers that rare travel experience – landscapes that exceed even the most ambitious Instagram expectations, paired with genuine wilderness encounters and comfortable luxury. Whether you're watching the sunrise paint alpenglow on Lake Louise or savouring a fireside whisky after a day of mountain exploration, the Canadian Rockies create moments of quiet magic that will call you back again and again.

LAKESIDE ITALIAN DREAM

LAKESIDE CHARM

Lake Garda completely won me over during my stay in pretty Bardolino! This lovely little town has the most beautiful flower beds along the promenade and lots of great restaurants and shops to browse through.

I stayed at Parc Gritti in mid-June - perfect timing really, as it was warm enough for swimming but we missed the summer holiday crowds. One thing I really loved was having free access to Lido Mirabella, just a short walk from our hotel. Lazing on a sun lounger with those gorgeous lake views was just heaven!

Bardolino is brilliantly located for exploring. We really enjoyed our walks along the lake to Garda and Lazise nearby. The paths are nice and smooth, and the views are absolutely gorgeous! Being in the middle of things also meant we could easily jump on ferries to visit other places around the lake.

DAY TRIPS & PRACTICAL TIPS

We had such a brilliant day out to Malcesine! We took the Monte Baldo cable car right to the top (book ahead to skip the queues!) and wandered around up there. You'll never guess what we saw - alpacas! In Italy of all places! Take a jumper though - it's quite nippy up there, even in summer!

Sirmione was another lovely day trip. We took a little boat around the peninsula and climbed up Scaligero Castle for some amazing photos. Then I had what must be the best ice cream I've ever tasted while sitting by the lake. Just perfect!

I really liked quaint little Limone too, with all its lemon groves. Walking around the Lemonaia del Castel felt like going back in time!

Wilderness Hotels in Finland operate a handful of different lodge accommodations, each with inclusive activity packages designed to showcase the best cold-weather experiences and opportunities to witness the Northern Lights. I stayed at Muotka Wilderness Lodge in a traditional log cabin complete with private sauna, though various room types are available to accommodate different budgets and preferences.

The optimal visiting period spans December through April, when Finland's Lapland region transforms into its quintessential winter state.

EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCES

The must-do activities include witnessing the Aurora Borealis, skidooing across frozen landscapes, traditional sleigh rides, reindeer encounters, husky sledding, and snow shoeing through pristine forests.

I strongly recommend opting in for phone alerts should the Aurora appear during the night. Our experience was particularly memorable—after a somewhat disappointing four-hour organised Aurora Hunt with no sightings, we returned despondently to our cabin just before midnight. As we climbed the steps, there they were, dancing magnificently in the night sky above us. Truly a magical moment!

Dining is primarily buffet-style, featuring hearty and flavourful Lappish specialities, fresh salads and vegetables, complemented by creamy ice creams and delicious desserts. It's worth noting that not all dietary requirements can be accommodated, so it's advisable to verify options at the time of booking.

CULTURAL INSIGHTS

& PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

A cultural highlight is learning about the Sami people and their traditions. Meeting an indigenous reindeer herder family provides fascinating insights into this ancient way of life that continues to thrive in the modern world.

While the lodge provides all cold-weather outer layers including coats, mittens and boots, don't forget to pack your own thermal underwear, gloves, hats, scarves and sunglasses for optimal comfort.

For transport, the lodge operates quality minibuses for all transfers. Travel options include direct flights twice weekly from London Gatwick to Ivalo, or connections via Helsinki, making this remarkable destination surprisingly accessible despite its remote Arctic location.

Shamwari was a real highlight of my South African journey! The reserve offers a brilliant range of accommodation options to suit different travellers. Families are well catered for with child-friendly lodges and engaging activities, while couples looking for a romantic safari experience will find more intimate settings at other lodges.

I was absolutely thrilled with the wildlife viewing opportunities - seeing the "Big 5" in their natural habitat was truly special. A practical bonus that many visitors will appreciate is that this is a malaria-free area, so no need to worry about antimalarial medication.

SHAMWARI CONSERVATION AND FAMILY ADVENTURES

Their conservation work really impressed me, particularly the Born Free Foundation Big Cat Sanctuary which provides a haven for rescued lions and leopards. These conservation projects add a meaningful dimension to the safari experience that goes beyond just wildlife spotting.

I was amazed by the variety of activities available! You can enjoy horse riding along beautiful trails, seasonal whale watching (absolutely spectacular between June and December), marine safaris to spot seals and other sea life, and lovely wine experiences showcasing the region's excellent vineyards.

The food was exceptional - many ingredients come straight from their organic farm, creating fresh, flavourful meals that truly reflect the region's bounty.

NATURAL WONDERS

Nature enthusiasts will love the botanical tours highlighting Grootbos's incredible floral diversity. The fynbos ecosystem contains numerous plant species found nowhere else on earth, making the forest walks and guided hikes fascinating.

Bird watchers will find plenty to keep them occupied, with numerous species inhabiting the reserve. And after days of exploration, the forest-set spa provides a wonderfully peaceful setting for relaxation.
