Ashdown Travel found us exactly the right Maldives resort for our needs. We wanted modern design, good dining options and excellent snorkelling – they delivered on all three. Their suggestion to book a sunrise yoga session on our villa deck was inspired, and we appreciated their honest advice about which excursions were worth taking. A relaxing, hassle-free holiday from start to finish.

ZIMBABWE CALLING

Having explored Zimbabwe numerous times over the years, I'm always struck by how this remarkable country continues to surprise even seasoned safari-goers. From thundering Victoria Falls to wildlife-rich Hwange and Mana Pools, Zimbabwe offers authentic experiences that more commercial destinations simply can't match.


The Falls are magnificent – 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' or 'The Smoke That Thunders' perfectly describes the visible mist plumes. I recommend strategic use of viewing platforms for the best photos without getting completely drenched!


Hwange boasts impressive elephant populations. I've stayed at Verney's, Somalisa and Davison's Camps, each offering that perfect blend of comfort and wilderness immersion. Listening to lions calling around camp creates lasting memories.


For the adventurous, Mana Pools delivers Zimbabwe's premier walking safari. Witnessing the 'ballerina' elephants standing on hind legs to reach acacia leaves – behaviour seen nowhere else in Africa – is extraordinary.


A Lake Kariba houseboat provides the perfect finale. Watching sunset over partially submerged trees while fish eagles call overhead epitomises African magic.


Zimbabwe works well year-round, though May to September offers more moderate temperatures. The warmth of its people and raw landscape beauty keep me returning.
